Vaccinations

Yes I do give vaccinations that are necessary.  The state of Oregon requires that dogs get a 3 year certified Rabies Vaccination, every 3 years.  I use a mercury-thimersol free vaccine only!

I also give feline and canine distemper complex vaccinations if they are needed.  The American Animal Hospital Association recommends giving the distempers (FVRCP for cats and DHLP/DHP for dogs) also every 3 years, unless the patient is at increased risk of high frequent exposure, as would be encountered in frequent traveling to ‘shows’, etc.  For middle aged and older pets I caution against any vaccinations unless truly necessary, and NEVER vaccinate a sick or compromised animal!  We can discuss your pets’ specific situation then decide what’s best.

Feline Leukemia vaccine is also available, and that I give only to cats that are truly at risk–mostly outdoors, and fighting a lot–the virus is transmitted through breeding and fighting/bites, etc.  The vaccination is known for its side effects, that can include cancer at the injection site, so I always want my client to know the risks so the decision to give the vaccination is an informed one.

Canine Bordetella is specifically for ‘Kennel Cough’ and some boarding kennels require it.  The illness is marked by a dry hacking cough; the pet rarely runs a fever or gets really ill, but he’s pretty uncomfortable for up to a few weeks and is highly contagious to other dogs when infected.  I recommend the vaccination for dogs that are frequently boarded, especially if also traveling.

The Rabies vaccinations and Distempers are included with the cost of the initial examination– The Bordetella and Feline Leukemia vaccinations are extra.
